Bike and Walk to the Market Day

Bike and Walk to the Market Day

Right now, farmers markets are full of delicious produce and the weather is perfect for a stroll or ride. At the Arlington Mill Farmers Market on July 13, celebrate the best of active transportation and healthy food choices by walking or biking to the market. You’ll receive a punch card to keep track of your biking and walking trips to the Market and enter a season-long raffle. Plus on July 13, enjoy farmers market BINGO, a backwards bike, and other kid-friendly biking and walking activities.

All Summer Long

All summer long, the Arlington Mill Farmers Market wants to reward you for taking active, healthy trips to visit the market. Each week when you bike or walk to the market this summer, bring your card to the CPRO booth to get it punched. At the end of the farmers market season, we’ll distribute giveaways to thank you for making healthy transportation choices. The more weeks that you bike or walk, the more chances you’ll have to get rewards.

Get your punch card on July 13 only!

Sweet Treats Ride
Jul 27 @ 11:30 am – 2:30 pm

Cookies, pie, ice cream, and candy! We’ll have it all in the Sweet Treats Ride! This ride is for those with a sweet tooth or who have always heard about one of the locations we’re going to and thought I need to check out that place. So let’s do it! We’ll be visiting four locations. We’re starting at Nicecream which sells specially flavored ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. From there we will stop at Acme Pie to try one of their seasonal pies made with a flaky southern crust. Our next stop will be Best Buns to taste one of their yummy cookies or muffins. And finally, we will ride to Sugar Factory in Pentagon City to buy candy for later.

This is a family-friendly ride. Join us for one, two, or all four stops.

This is a one-way ride ending at Pentagon City Metro. You will be able to take the Yellow or Blue Line back if you like or continue on with your day via bike.

Single Slice Spin
Aug 10 @ 11:30 am – 1:30 pm

We’re partnering with Pizza Club of Washington Meetup Group for our Single Slice Spin Arlington Edition. We will check out the pizza in three locations. Starting at Ballston Metro we’ll ride to Goody’s pizza where they boast of having a jumbo NY style slice. We’ll burn some calories as we ride to WiseGuys (my favorite) for a slice then end in Crystal City at We, the Pizza. If you love pizza,(and who doesn’t?) This is your chance to try out a slice at three places and meet some other pizza lovers while biking off those cheesy calories.

August Bike Book Club
Aug 24 @ 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Do you have a bunch of books that you keep promising yourself you will read one day? Or maybe you have a goal to read one book a month and you just realized it’s June and you haven’t read a book since last June? Well, let’s fix that issue!

BikeArlington in partnership with the Arlington County Library is hosting a monthly Bike Book Club. It’s the perfect event for you if you 1. Love to read 2. Enjoy bicycling, 3. Want to ride your bike with friendly people at a leisurely pace and/or 4. Want to read more books.

We will meet at locations close to a Capital Bikeshare station in case you don’t have a bike then ride to one of the county’s libraries to discuss that month’s book.

Disaster Relief Trials
Sep 14 @ 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

The Disaster Relief Trials is a bicycle competition which challenges participants to consider how their bike could be a resource during an emergency (with the hopes you will carry this knowledge to expand the scope of your bike transportation capabilities!). It simulates a disaster, blocking roadways, and challenges participants to use their bikes to pick up food, water, and other emergency supplies from checkpoints throughout Arlington County while completing emergency preparedness challenges and traversing obstacles, such as barriers and water crossings.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Beginning and ending at Gateway Park in Rosslyn, participants will ride to checkpoints throughout the County to pick up and deliver food, water, and other supplies, relay critical messages, and traverse obstacles such as a water crossing, rough terrain, and physical barriers. Participants can use a regular bike with racks, panniers, and/or backpacks, a cargo bike, or a regular or cargo bike with electric assist.

At each checkpoint, participants will also be presented with emergency preparedness challenges. Points will be awarded for the total weight of supplies transported back to the finish, as well as a successful traverse of obstacles and completion of the emergency preparedness challenges. This is not timed and the trials are not a race.

LOCATION

The start/finish location will be at the lower half of Gateway Park (between Lynn Street and Ft. Myer Drive) in Rosslyn (1300 Lee Highway), with checkpoints throughout the County. Checkpoint locations will be revealed at the event start.

FINISH FESTIVAL

Community members, families, observers, and challenge participants are invited to attend the Disaster Relief Trials Finish Festival. While the participants bike around Arlington, test yourself on emergency preparedness skills and get your family in tip-top shape for an emergency, including free bike maintenance and assessments. Plus, eat delicious food from local food trucks, bring the kiddos and watch them do our “Kiddie DRT” course, get free swag, play lawn games, try out new fitness activities, and more! The Finish Festival will be located at the DRT Start/Finish line in Gateway Park in Rosslyn and can be enjoyed by all (open to the public) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
