Ritch Viola, one of Arlington County’s fantastic Transportation Planners, was curious to see what the counters would report for Bike To Work Day (May 20th). Here is a quick analysis he put together of bike usage at three automated counters around the county.

Custis Trail near N. Scott St. (Rosslyn)
Bike to Work Day = 2,544
May weekday average pre-BTW Day = 1,451
May weekday average post-BTW Day = 1,674

Four Mile Run near Shirlington Underpass
Bike to Work Day = 1,085
May weekday average pre-BTW Day = 796
May weekday average post-BTW Day = 923

W&OD Trail At Bon Air Park
Bike to Work Day = 1,200
May weekday average pre-BTW Day = 812
May weekday average post-BTW Day = 1,117

There is a very evident bump up for Bike To Work Day, and an apparent lingering effect afterwards. June data will tell us if that group of new bicycle commuters keeps cycling.
