An annual celebration coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, Bike to Work Day 2025 took place on Thursday, May 15. More than 12,000 people throughout the DMV biked to work that morning and visited one of more than 100 event “pit stops” where they could enjoy refreshments, engage with tabling partners and other riders, and pick up a free commemorative T-shirt.
Arlington hosted eight pit stops, including three managed by BikeArlington in Ballston, Rosslyn, and Shirlington. Rosslyn was the largest pit stop in the region, with 566 registrants, followed by Ballston, with 493.
These BikeArlington pit stop photos capture some highlights of the 2025 event.
Up Before the Sun

It was still dark when setup began for this early-morning event, but hardworking volunteers showed up en force to lend a hand. Some, like Allan, pictured at right, have supported BikeArlington and Bike to Work Day for years. Others were first-timers who stayed for the entire event and did whatever was needed. Arlington’s bike community is strong and committed: People help because they love biking and believe in the power of active transportation to make Arlington a greener, more livable place.
Terrific Partners Greeted the Sun with Us!

While volunteers and staff were tending to the needs of tabling partners, organizing T-shirts, and setting up tables, the Rosslyn Business Improvement District’s helpful Ambassador team arrived first thing to offer their support and make sure Gateway Park was ready for riders. Their positive presence is always appreciated!
Free Bike Checks for Everyone

Bike mechanics from Trek Clarendon provided free bike checks to Rosslyn pit stop visitors while Trek Ballston co-hosted the Ballston pit stop and also provided free bike checks there. Their services helped ensure participants’ bikes were in good working order for future rides.
Tasty Treats from McDonald’s

McD Mateos, which owns several McDonald’s franchises in the DMV, served delicious complimentary hot breakfast and coffee for Rosslyn participants. Their community engagement team’s generous support of this event for the past three years has ensured a great experience for all.
Busy in Ballston

The Ballston pit stop at Trek has grown exponentially for the past three years. This year, it was the second biggest pit stop in the region. Its burgeoning attendance is no doubt due to its growing residential, business, and retail footprint—and gourmet doughnuts and coffee from Good Company. It’s also the proud pit stop of the Escuela Key Bicibus!
A Sense of Community

From SUSMO (Sustainable Mobility for Arlington County) to Arlington Public Library to other advocacy organizations and local businesses, Bike to Work Day brought 35 tabling partners to our pit stops so participants could engage, learn about their work, and pick up useful information and giveaways. Deejays at all three BikeArlington sites set an upbeat tone with energizing tunes for the morning’s festivities.
Well-fed and Festive in Shirlington

Located on Shirlington Plaza, the Shirlington pit stop offered delicious doughnuts and coffee from Astro Doughnuts and egg biscuit sandwiches from Acme Pie Co. It was the place to be if you wanted to be well-fed and fortified for the day.
Repping Arlington’s New E-bike Voucher Program

The team from Conte’s Bike Shop, Virginia Square, was on hand in Shirlington providing free bike checks on the plaza—and helping hand out informational flyers promoting Arlington County’s new e-bike voucher program, set to launch in summer 2025.
Catching Up with Friends

One of the best parts of Bike to Work Day is the chance to catch up with biking friends while meeting new ones. The group pictured here is no exception: All three women are experienced bicyclists and longtime friends who welcomed the chance to catch up at the Shirlington pit stop. Bicycle Advisory Committee Chair Cynthia Palmer, center, even arrived at 5 a.m. to help with set-up!
The Furriest Pit Stop Tabling Partner

Doughnuts, breakfast burritos, oatmeal, and even coffee were no match for Rosslyn’s cutest (and furriest!) pit stop tabling partner from Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail. Calmly seated in her Bunch Bike, she eagerly soaked up love from any pit stop visitor, staff member, or volunteer who came her way.
