Capital Bikeshare Update
Arlington’s Capital Bikeshare system has had a fantastic year so far in 2014 with increased ridership and continued growth of the network to 75 stations. With the publishing of Arlington’s FY14 Summary Report on Capital Bikeshare, we wanted to provide some recent updates which impact our customers.
In the spring, the Arlington County Board approved a Capital Improvement Plan budget for fiscal year 2015 that includes about $1 million per year for the next 10 years in new funding to buy and operate many more stations. This funding will allow the system to expand more quickly into more neighborhoods and add more stations and greater capacity in neighborhoods that are already served. Guidance on expansion came from input from Arlingtonians and has been documented through our Capital Bikeshare Transit Development Plan. Our expansion plans through 2021 are shown in the Expansion Map below.

There is still some uncertainty about the supply of new equipment due to our station vendor’s bankruptcy. In addition to the equipment vendor’s bankruptcy, the two companies that worked together on the hardware and software components of the system have discontinued their partnership. The manufacturer of the software and circuitry for our Capital Bikeshare stations has committed to producing a new, enhanced bikeshare station that will work seamlessly with our existing system. We haven’t yet had a chance to test this new station, but look forward to ensuring this equipment meets or exceeds our expectations. This year we have continued expanding our network thanks to the station inventory we had purchased before our vendor’s bankruptcy. We look forward to new equipment options which will be compatible with our system and allow us to further expand the service’s reach with new features.
