Phoenix Bikes is proud to be launching a new race season for “Team Phoenix”, our junior cycling club that was established September 2015. This year’s team is comprised of 14 enthusiastic youth mechanics with a goal to take their cycling skills to the next level, competing in a variety of disciplines, including road, mountain, and cyclocross racing over the course of the upcoming year.

Team eligibility

To be eligible for Team Phoenix, youth ages 12 to 17 must successfully complete, at a minimum, the Phoenix Bikes Earn-a-Bike program, participate in at least five Saturday youth rides with Phoenix Bikes in the last six months, be able to ride 30 miles continuously/without stopping for breaks (as measured by 10 laps at Hains Point Park), and pledge to attend 75% of team meetings/practices and 60% of team races. In return for this dedication and commitment, all fees associated with team membership, such as race licenses, registration, transportation, and gear is covered by Phoenix Bikes with support from adult race teams, grants, and other generous community partners like BikeArlington.

Team Phoenix is enjoying a productive pre-season, which has included bi-weekly yoga and competing in Wednesday Day Night Spins garage races in Crystal City each Wednesday in March. They also recently completed a high and low ropes challenge course with Adventure Links at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park to promote teambuilding. Team Phoenix’s first USA Cycling race of 2017 will be the Richmond International Raceway Criterium on March 26. Follow Phoenix Bikes on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to get updates on the team and cheer them on! We’d like to thank BikeArlington for their continued support of Phoenix Bikes and Team Phoenix in promoting bicycling among the young people of our community.
